ORGANIC OR NATURAL COSMETICS?
It is not always easy to differentiate between organic and natural cosmetics. In this article, we look at what differs between these two types of products and also help you distinguish them from conventional products.
DEFINITION OF A NATURAL COSMETIC
Generally speaking, a natural cosmetic is a cosmetic that contains at least 95% natural ingredients.
Recognizing natural cosmetics is not always easy, because there is more and more greenwashing on the shelves. We frequently see cosmetics claiming more than 95% natural ingredients, even though they contain ingredients that consumers no longer want: silicones, BHT, phenoxyethanol, etc.
To be sure of what you are buying, we advise you to look for the presence of the COSMOS NATURAL logo, which guarantees that the cosmetic has been checked and that it complies with the definition given previously.
More demanding than natural cosmetics, organic cosmetics must rely on ingredients grown according to the rules of organic farming.
DEFINITION OF AN ORGANIC COSMETIC
An organic cosmetic is a natural cosmetic, which is also required to have a certain percentage of ingredients from organic farming. In this case, at least 95% of what can be organic must be organic.
To recognize it, the easiest way is to look for the oval Cosmébio logo.
WATER AND MINERALS
CANNOT BE ORGANIC
Present in a large number of cosmetics, water cannot be considered organic, because it is not cultivated, unlike other ingredients such as plant extracts. The same goes for minerals (clays, etc.), which are taken directly from nature.
To be as transparent as possible about what is in your cosmetics, a second percentage is indicated on the products. It tells you the proportion of organic ingredients in the entire product. This percentage is set at 20% minimum.
